Colorwash Garden

Appliquéd and pieced by Barbara Boyd.  Quilted by Julann's Stitchery.

Large wall hanging.

This is a quilt I taught as a block-of-the-month at Quilter's Courtyard.  This is not a typical setting as I intended to use it on a day bed.  Hand appliquéd flowers are bright batiks.  Background is a cream batik and several greens.

1st Place Winner in Viewers' Choice for Large Quilts
Baltimore Bunnies

Pieced by Janet Schuetze.  Quilted by Diane Schotl.

Twin size

This quilt was fused and then buttonhole-stitched by hand.  I enjoyed working on it.

2nd Place Winner in Viewers' Choice for Large Quilts
Sweet Magnolias

Pieced by Janet Schuetze.  Quilted by Diane Schotl.

Queen

Magnolia is the state flower of Louisiana, my home state.

3rd Place Winner for Viewers' Choice for Large Quilts

Friendship

Pieced by Elizabeth Moore.  Quilted at Quilter's Haven.

Lap size

While I was piecing this quilt I kept hearing from my good friend about how much it matched her home decor.  Little did she know I was making it for her.  It was fun to surprise her on her birthday.  We started our quilting endeavor together so it was a joy to make something for her.

2009: Crazy and Fun

Pieced and quilted by Ginny Kubik

Lap size

I participated in a sampler class and produced a number of  8-inch Kaffe Fassett blocks.  I added some 12-inch blocks and neon tone-on-tone batiks.  For me, 2009 was a year characterized by several intense, meaningful and sometimes bizarre events, which my quilt commemorates.
Alpha Buddies

Pieced and quilted by Claudia Kinville.

Lap size.

This alphabet panel was a gift from my sister Leslie.  She's the animal lover in our family.

Asian Fusion

Pieced and quilted by Kim Gannaway.

Front - top photo, Back - bottom photo.

Twin size

I love the "One Block Wonder" technique.  This is my first two-sided quilt: a "top" on both sides.  The full Asian panel is on one side; the cut-up panel is on the other.  I still can't believe I cut up that gorgeous Asian fabric.  I'm glad I have both sides to look at.

Aurora Borealis

Pieced and quilted by Sandi Irish.

I made this quilt for McCall's quilt magazine.

Autumn Fantasy

Pieced by Jackie Grinde.  Quilted by Diane Schotl.

Twin size

A beautiful block-of-the-month project from Quilter's Haven, Rosemount, and Jean Graham's wonderful fabric selection.
Because I Said So

Pieced and quilted by Sandi Irish.

Queen size

I bought the blue Java batiks at the AQS show in Des Moines, just had to have them.  As to the one red square, I knew it would make my husband crazy and I just wanted to put it there.
Best Things in Life

Pieced and quilted by Jackie Grinde.

Lap size

A mixed-media quilt made to spotlight a sentence from wallpaper at a lovely bed-and- breakfast.
Big Moose

Pieced and quilted by Beth Kobliska

Lap size

The moose and mountain top are from a Judy Lyons pattern.  I added a forest floor and pieced borders of trees, leaves, flying geese and sun.
Fish Pizzazz

Pieced and quilted by Beth Kobliska.

Lap size

I originally bought this fish panel because I thought it was ugly, and wanted to challenge myself to make a beautiful quilt with it.  I liked the first quilt so much (Fish Sanctuary, entered in last year’s show) I searched the internet for another panel.  For this second fish quilt, I used lighter fabrics, more yellow, and appliquéd some of the fish swimming out of their blocks.  I quilted it with a pantograph of bass fish.

Click here to see a the first version of this quilt, with the same fish panel, that Beth made and entered in last year's show.

Click here to see this same fish panel used by Nanette Sutherland in a quilt for her father.
Forest

Pieced and quilted by Beth Kobliska.

Queen size

I quilted over 500 pine trees in this quilt, so I named it Forest.   I designed the pattern – easy to make, with an interlocking puzzle effect achieved by color placement.
French Braid

Pieced and quilted by Beth Kobliska.

Double size

I love blending the fabrics from light to dark in this pattern.
Log Cabin Star

Pieced and quilted by Beth Kobliska.

Double / full size

I just felt like making a Log Cabin late one evening.  Good thing I have a big fabric stash on hand for those late night sewing impulses.
Crossed Kayaks

Pieced by Karen Asmundson.  Quilted by Vickie McIntyre.

Queen size

I made this quilt for my brother who recently moved back to the Midwest.  Welcome home, John!
Coffee Time

Pieced and quilted by Susie Smidt.

Lap size

This is the first quilt I made using jelly rolls.  I took them to a quilt retreat and made it without so much cutting.  The quilt was a gift to my mother-in-law for her 70th birthday.  She likes to use it on her kitchen table.  I quilted it with swirling lines to resemble steam rising from hot coffee.

Funky Stripes

Pieced and quilted by Susie Smidt

Lap size

I purchased this pattern at last year's show from our speaker, Lori Allison.  The fabrics were my "souvenir" purchase on this last summer's vacation the Black Hills.  These fabrics are not my usual style, but I really enjoyed working with them.

(Bottom photo is the pieced back.)
Color My World

Pieced by Jackie Grinde.  Quilted by Diane Schotl.

Lap size

This quilt was started during the 2009 quilt show class by Allison's Quilt Designs.
Fancy Fans

Pieced by Darlene Boone.  Quilted by Richard Larson.

King size

My friend, Janice Benjamin and I decided to make our own version of a fan quilt on our monthly quilting get-together.  It started out to be a twin and just grew and grew.

Fish Quilt, or as My Son Calls it, "Quilty"

Pieced by Elizabeth Moore.  Quilted by Page Johnson.

Twin

When my 3-year old son, who loves fishing, got to move into his own room, I wanted to make it special.  I found the fish panel and the rest just fell in place.  Special thanks to Rosemary Root, whose guidance was paramount in the successful completion of this project.

(Bottom photo shows quilted detail of howling wolf.)
Kansas Hors D'oeuvres

Pieced by Sharon Solomon.  Quilted by Joe Filer.

Lap size

When I saw this pattern, I knew I had the Kansas Trouble fat quarters to make it.
Dizzy Geese

Pieced by Jackie Grinde.  Quilted by Diane Schotl.

Lap size.

A great "recession" quilt, made of many scraps.
Funky Storm

Pieced by Sharon Solomon.  Quilted by Joe Filer.

Lap size

When my life had taken a drastic turn, I used these bright, bold colors and patterns to get me out of my funk.

Hidden Dragon

Pieced and quilted by Rosemary Root.

Lap size

This quilt uses Maxine Rosenthal's "One Block Wonder" technique.

Joseph's Coat

Pieced by Sally Mortenson.  Quilted by Lynette Gelling.

Lap size

I cleaned out my shelf of batiks to use all the fabric I no longer like.  I call the quilt "Joseph's Coat" because it is made of many colors.
Lakeville Pines

Pieced by Jan Wilke.  Quilted by Ann Shue.

Wall hanging.

In 2008 I wanted a quilt hung in our entryway and my usually handy husband, nailed it to the wall.  When I protested, he said, "Well, I used small nails."  So, in 2009 I bought this kit with money from quilting friends for my 70th birthday.  It's perfect in the spot I planned it for.
Log Cabin

Pieced by Diane Gooding.  Quilted by Loretta.

Queen

Made for my son for his 25th birthday.  I wanted many colors and thought it would be fun to make a log cabin.  I had an old Singer machine where the quarter inch was off, so I put this in a closet for 2 years.  Once I got a new machine, I finished it in 2 months.
Bethany's Spring Wedding

Pieced and appliquéd by Mary Burnes.  Quilted by Lisa Hultberg.

Lap size

My daughter's best friend is getting married this spring.  She helped me pick out this pattern and the fabric for the flowers. The quilt will be a present (and a surprise).  I'm sure no one will mind that it's part of our quilt show.
Ocean City Placemats to Quilt

Pieced by Diane Gooding.  Quilted by Loretta.

Lap size

Bought in Ocean City, New Jersey, with the intention of making placemats.  Decided to combine them and make Yellow Brick Road.  Pieced at first-ever quilt retreat on Lake Beauty in 2009 with Quilt Cove.  A lot of people had their own twin quilt; me:  I had a sleeping bag.  Not anymore!
Paisley Windows

Pieced and quilted by Cindy Hilleary.

Twin size

I made this quilt for my sister out of a paisley fabric that she fell in love with.  She'll be so surprised when she receives it after the show.

Queen Size Quilt

Pieced by Jean Graham.  Quilted by Page Johnson.
Raspberry Pie

Pieced by Linda Lundin.  Quilted by Diane Schotl.

Lap size

Kit from Quilter's Haven.  I added some of my own fabrics.  I am making a second quilt with the same pattern and colors but different fabrics.  I plan to use them in a bedroom with twin beds.
Scrappy Stripes

Pieced and quilted by Jan Wilke.

Queen size

I saw this pattern in an old quilt magazine; it seemed a good pattern to pare down my scraps.  Well, that didn't quite do it.  I have a lot left.

Ryan's Dorm Quilt

Pieced by Jan Wilke.  Quilted by Ann Shue.

Twin size.

I made a similar quilt for Ryan's brother, and his mom thought the colors were so adaptive that Ryan's should be similar.

(Bottom photos show quilted penguins in plain blocks.)
Scandinavian Mist

Pieced and quilted by Kim Gannaway.

Lap size

I made this quilt for my mom and dad.  I wanted to make it in greens, but was having no luck finding fabrics.  In one shop I gravitated toward the blues, and voila blues were practically jumping into my arms.  So, instead of the pattern's name of "Irish Mist", I call this quilt "Scandinavian Mist".
Serenity I

Pieced by Molly Moran.   Quilted by Diane Schotl.

Lap size

My love of the ocean and the beach;  found the fabric on a trip to Florida.
A Special Quilt for my Favorite Aunt

Pieced and quilted by Ginnie Kubik.

Lap size

This quilt is for my Aunt Chris, who has been a second mother to me as well as a very special friend.
Sumptuous  Sunflowers

Pieced and quilted by Kim Gannaway.

Lap size

I have always loved sunflower fabrics and this one in particular, so this was a lot of fun to work on.  I can't wait for late summer when all the sunflowers and coneflowers start to bloom and I get this quilt out to enjoy.

Too Hot

Pieced by Sally Mortenson.  Quilted by Lynette Gelling.

Twin size

A friend who is a fabric representative gave me a group of fabric samples, which became this quilt.  I sewed until I ran out of samples.  The bright colors inspired me to call this "Too Hot".

(Bottom photo shows detail of quilting in border from back.)
Triangles and Flowers

Pieced by Kaye Goers.  Quilted by Nanette Sutherland.

Twin size

I used half-square triangles but put them off center and appliquéd flowers in the central area for interest.
Trinity River Bridge

Pieced by Jeannette Root.  Quilted by Nanette Sutherland.

Lap size

While attending the quilt show on a show night, I was paging through magazines and found this quilt pattern.  I had visited the Trinity River near Dallas in 1986 and this bridge was under water due to flooding.
T-Shirt Memory Quilt

Pieced by Pat Basch.  Quilted by Julianne Windsperger.

Twin size.

This t-shirt quilt was put together at the DCSQ retreat and finished just 3 days before my daughter Christine's high school graduation.  She was quilt surprised and enjoyed remembering things about each shirt.  The label on the back is signed by all those who attended her graduation party.
Turning Twenty Again

Pieced by Molly Moran.  Quilted by Diane Schotl.

Twin size

Perfect dorm quilt for my daughter.
Playful Snowmen

Pieced and quilted by Kim Gannaway.

Twin size

This was a pattern from the breakfast club at the Shakopee quilt shop last winter.  I had the snowmen fabrics and was just waiting for the right pattern to sue them on, something that would have a big enough block to showcase the adorable snowmen.
Three Crosses for God's Barn

Pieced and quilted by Lisa Hultberg.

Twin size

God's Barn in Lakeville is a Christ-centered outreach for teens and young adults.  This will hang in our place of ministry, which is, incidentally, a renovated barn!
Passion Flowers

Pieced by Jan Wilke.  Quilted by Ann Shue.

Lap size

I bought the patterned fabric in Hilton Head, North Carolina, but shopped all over for the blue.  The I pieced it on a trip to Vermont in motels along the way.  Not the best idea.
Feedsack Fun

Pieced and quilted by Karen Asmundson.

Lap size

I came across this pattern in Hudson, Wisconsin.  I used reproduction and vintage feedsack fabrics. I love how it turned out and wish I would have made it bigger.
